Gestational Diabetes and Nutrition

Diagnosed with gestational diabetes? There is nothing to worry about. Gestational diabetes does not mean having an unhealthy pregnancy. In fact, it is very manageable, even without medication or insulin. After consulting a specialist, all one needs to do is follow a proper food regime and engage in moderate exercise. So, let’s take a look at what foods one must eat and avoid for gestational diabetes.

Foods to eat
One must include these foods to manage gestational diabetes.

1. Protein
Proteins help balance out the sugar in the body. Moreover, they help reduce morning sickness and keep one full for longer when eaten in the morning. That’s not all. Protein also helps facilitate the healthy growth of the baby. Foods such as tofu, lean chicken, eggs, fish, quinoa, and beans are great sources of protein.

2. Veggies
Non-starchy vegetables like green and yellow peppers, broccoli, carrots, and lettuce contain almost no calories. Moreover, they provide fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making them one of the healthiest snacks one can eat. One can use frozen or fresh veggies in soups and stir-fries. But make sure one does not add any additional sauces as they contain excessive amounts of sodium.

3. Healthy fats
Healthy fats keep the heart in good shape. They also help in the development of the baby and provide energy to the mother. Include healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, and walnuts in one’s meals every day. On the other hand, one must cut down on unhealthy fats such as salad dressings, processed meats like bacon, and junk food like hamburgers.

Foods to avoid
Here are a few foods one must strictly avoid for gestational diabetes.

1. Too many fruits or fruit juices
Fruits are a healthy source of various vitamins and minerals. But consuming too many portions of fruit throughout the day may increase blood sugar levels. Therefore, one must limit their fruit intake to one portion a day. One must also avoid fruit juices, as they are a concentrated source of carbohydrates and easily increase sugar levels. Additionally, one must completely refrain from canned fruits.

2. Bakery products
Products found in a bakery such as cakes, pastries, waffles, cookies, and candies contain excess amounts of sugars, preservatives, refined products, and fats, all of which are harmful to women with gestational diabetes. Therefore, women must avoid bakery goods completely. Additionally, one must beware of any low-sugar or sugar-free products because, despite the label, these foods and beverages contain sugar in hidden forms.

3. Starchy foods
Foods that are high in starch increase blood sugar. This is because the blood breaks down carbohydrates into sugar, which then enters the bloodstream, suddenly triggering the production of insulin. Women with gestational diabetes must refrain from or reduce the intake of high-carb foods. This includes pasta, white rice, white bread, and potatoes. One can eat similar foods made out of whole grains in moderation.
